Subdepartment of Quantitative Ecology is integral part of Department of Biology, Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek. It consists of four laboratories: Laboratory for Analysis of Biological Systems (LABS), Laboratory for Ecological Modeling (LEM), Laboratory for EcoBiogeography (LEB) and Laboratory for Ecological Microbiology (LEMIC). Main activity of the Sub department is scientific research of the soil, marine and fresh water ecology, primarily by using quantitative methods. Over 100 scientific papers cited in Current Contents database in last 20 years demonstrate our experience and scientific competence. Flexibility, thoroughness, accuracy and reliability are fundamental imperatives of all our research teams, either in scientific research, or in provision of professional services and research within our services.
Quantitative biological characterization of research area is the first activity we conduct on land and in all water habitats. Highest diving licenses and years of experience in sport and technical scuba diving, provide the possibility of performing different jobs, such as direct sampling, measurement and habitats inventorying, at over 100 m of depth. Within our Sub department is the only laboratory in Croatia that can monitor pedobiological state in any soil types. Furthermore, over 15 years of experience in practicing environmental biomonitoring using molecular biomarkers, enables us to do excellent evaluation of ecological and environmental risks. In past activities we have gained experience with wide range of test animal and herbal organisms for use in biomonitoring. Quantitative biological characterization and basic biomonitoring is closely associated to different tasks, such as evaluation of ecological status, estimation of impact range of the effects of anthropogenic factors, ecology system modeling, prognostics and quantitative evaluation of environmental impacts. In our research of insects we have developed prognostic system that is based on our own software solutions that is still evolving, and which can be modified for different insect species. Ecological microbiology team explains energy foundations of systems, on micro- and mesocosmic environmental levels, and gives foundations for analysis of lower levels of food chains in targeted ecological system.
Developing of bioecological databases and practicing state of the art biostatistical methods in scientific experiment design, research and measurements, are our activities that enable high quality implementation and administration of overall scientific research, for our Sub department and institutions and companies we work with.
